My Last Five.

If you asked me to take down the last five books I've read, these are the ones I'd grab for you from my bookshelf.

Made me love her even more. I love what she wrote about marriage and being on the same team.

I've had this one sitting on my shelf for awhile and finally picked it up. This exchange from the beginning sunk me in:

You looked as if you didn't need anyone, she said.
But those are the ones who need the most, he said. Don't you know that?

The book is so much better than the movie (though it's beautifully cast).

I want to hug Anne Lamott. She got me through the trenches of the first weeks of motherhood with her honesty and tenderness. I just passed this one along to a dear friend who might need her now for different reasons, and I hope she feels as I do about this book.

Hands down, one of my absolute favorites. I could not put this book down. I read it while nursing Felix and I actually looked forward to nursing her because of this book. If you haven't read it yet, READ IT NOW. I will send you my dog eared copy.

(This is one of those rare gems where the movie is actually as great as the book. They couldn't have picked a better Charlie or Patrick. Please do yourself a favor and read the book, see the movie. I wish I could watch it with you)

“And if the man who once upon a time had been a boy who promised he'd never fall in love with another girl as long as he lived kept his promise, it wasn't because he was stubborn or even loyal. He couldn't help it.”
― Nicole KraussThe History of Love

I have wanted to read this for so long and finally decided to as a Valentine's treat to myself. I wanted to love it because I waited so long and because I love her husband's novels. And yet. If you've read this, I would love to discuss it with you (because I hate spoilers and fear I would give too much away saying what I didn't like about this book).

I'm in need of a new read. Any suggestions? What were the last five books you've read?

(another last five post)

I love me some Mindy! I need to get my paws on that book. I love her show, but what I think I like about it are her adorable one-liners and mannerisms. I heard an interview she did a while back on NPR and it made me want to chase her down and be her BFF as well!

Thanks for the reminder that I need to go get a copy of her book!!!

Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of my favorite books, too! It was so hard for me to put it down that I got up at 3am (after staying past twelve because I couldn't stop reading) just to finish it. And then, I cried! I wanted to buy all of my friends a copy of it. One of those books that I think everyone should read. As an adult. :) I so loved the movie, too!

Funny, you said that about The History of Love. I've been struggling to get through it for the last two months (after having the book on my shelf for quite awhile already). I'm not even halfway done. I was just telling my writing buddy how I want to love it so much because I've heard rave reviews from other bloggers, but I just can't seem to finish it.

My book recommendations, if you haven't already read them, are One Day by David Nicholls and The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Because of the style, both were hard reads at first, but once you get past that, they are both amazing reads. They're really an experience - books that really draw you in with the characters that they become like your best friends.

Mae, we are book soul mates! Like how you felt about wanting to give every friend of yours a copy of Perks? that's how I felt about "The Time Traveler's Wife." Hands down, my most favorite book EVER. I have made everyone I loved, read it--including ex boyfriends.

I enjoyed "One Day" too. Suggest me some more so I can find one I haven't read ;) I love your taste. Especially since I felt the same way about "The History of Love." It wasn't that it isn't written well. Let me know what you think when you do finish it because I had some questions! Her husband's book "Extremely Loud and Incredible Close"-WOW. I have never read anything like it.

I wasn't sure how they were going to put that part in Perks to screen, but they did it perfectly. So, so good!

Thank-you for your comment :) I like you! xo

I recently read "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother" and I really enjoyed it. It's an interesting memoir about parenting! A little intense, you've been warned!

I've always wanted to read Perks of Being a Wallflower but haven't yet! Let me know if you want my address ;)

Did I ever tell you about when Anne Lamott came and did a talk at San Quentin in the prison cafeteria? It was such a cool experience to have with my students.

You've made me want to re-read A History of Love b/c I can hardly remember it. My memory of books is TERRIBLE. :(

You know how much I loved Perks of Being a Wallflower . . . and the movie was great, too!

I am doing a lot of reading for work right now but am looking forward to starting a new novel soon!

Claire, no you didn't! that would have been a really great experience to see her speak. "Operating Instructions" was just a beautiful, honest book. I would have read it, even if I didn't have Felix. I actually sent this to Erin because in it, she went through the same heartache with her best friend.

Tell Marianne she needs to finally get on it with reading Perks. I can't blame her though. Any free time she gets is spent watching Parenthood ;)

I have the worst memory with books too! that's why when I texted you I said, "you may not remember if it's been awhile" because I am the same way. If you do reread it, I would like to discuss what I asked you in my text ;) that was what I was talking about when I said it was what kept me from loving it.
