July 1970.

the day i was leaving Texas, i pulled out our family albums. I desperately wished i had done this on the first day of my trip, rather than the morning i was leaving again.

Here's my beautiful mom before she was my mom... just a young thing in the Philippines in love with an American Airman. (see my Dad's stripes?) There on her dresser is the first big gift my Father gave her... a jewelry box that played the opening song of "Love Story," a movie he took her to see at the drive-through (one of their first real dates).

My Mom still has that jewelry box on her dresser at home. In their 39 years of marriage, it's one thing she has kept in all the moves as a military wife.

Along with a telegram he sent, promising to love her always.

and jewelry boxes are so romantic... they're the one gift that's always appropriate for a woman of any age - from a little girl with her first plastic rings, to a cherished grandmother with generations of jewels to pass on :)

shut up?! That is so so beautifully sweet. movie status. Real life love stories are the best. Your momma was in the Philippines and fell in love with a man overseas?! That's so Miss Saigon, except it turned out happy. I love it!

your mom is just beautiful, M. and how lovely that she still keeps the jewelry box. my mom's most treasured item from my dad is a piece of onion skin paper (super thin paper) where he wrote his proposal to her --- she has it in an album now, kept safe so that it will forever stay intact.

i absolutely love stories like your moms & dads.

This is so wonderful. It reminds me of my grandma - she lived in Colombia and met my grandpa, an Irish serviceman, there. What a treasure.
