The Diaries of Adam & Eve / Mark Twain

i've always had this fascination with God's first creation. When i was little, i used to be so mad at Eve for ruining His perfection. I would see pictures of lions cuddling with lambs in my childhood Bible and i wished with all my might that it was still this way.

i had a crazy professor (as most smart college literary types are) who was such a character. He wore black socks with sandals and would jump up on the desk to prove a point in English Literature. He was a detailed grader and would write his notes in the margins of each paper you turned in, wanting so much for you to perfect your thoughts. For this, i will never forget my first A in his class- no notes... a perfect A. The paper? over "Paradise Lost" by John Milton.

during college, i also started seeing someone who was not mine to have.

[It is my one great regret in life.] I created an email for him to write me forbidden fruitless words of lust. My email account name was registered under Eve.

it is a story i know well.

While exploring the Book Shop, up in my arms went a book i have always wanted by the brilliant Mark Twain.

Extracts from Adam's Diary
Ten Years Later

"After all these years, I see I was mistaken about Eve in the beginning;

it is better to live outside the Garden with her than

inside it without her."

m - how amazing is that...

From our first connection I have always admired your ability to really see yourself, faults and all. It is such a wonderful quality bestie. I think this "regret" has helped build the wonderful person you are today...

This is really making me think...I'm going through a stage where I'm really looking at myself in the mirror and wanting to change (not physically) what I see...but also just learn to be happy with myself. It's such a hard place to be!

I am always impressed by your honesty, by how open you are and how willing to accept the consequences of telling the truth, of sharing yourself with others.

All of it helps you to grow and become even more amazing.

I was first introduced to that story by my boyf, who is a huge Twain fanatic. Needless to say, I loved it. Now I make my students read it ... and inevitably they wind up loving it, too, boys and girls alike. :)

Jayne, i love that website!!! my favourite is the one from Frida. "Adieu, adieu, adieu!" - too funny! thanks for sharing :)

Erin, thank you. It's scary putting yourself (especially your hurt) out there. It helps to have support from friends like you. Thank-you for your comment, and you too Jozen. It means a lot.

Annie, i think it's amazing what you do. I love that you have them read this one. It's very interesting isn't it?

I adore Paradise Lost by Milton. Such an uplifting book.

And I really admire your honesty. Your posts are so eloquently written. I can almost feel your pain and regret in your words.

I'm glad you've found true true happiness now: you deserve it.

xx

The Diaries is one of my favorite Mark Twain books.

They are so much different than the books that most people think of when you think of Mark Twain (such as Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn)

I love how he brings them together and they seem so much like any couple you might meet today.
